I've mentioned reverb automation before, but never really discussed reverb its self. When you go to the reverb plug-in do you ever wonder how its made or what kind it is? No? Okay, well maybe i could tell you that you can think of a room, and get exactly how that sound in your audio. Interested? Great! Let me share.
Convolution reverb, is actual room reverb that you can use to place your audio signals in for realistic recreations of real-world acoustic environments. So if you want that barn yard feel in your post production, or that real church feel for your choir. Convolution reverb can handle that for you. You can also get the exact way chambers sound such at the EMT 140 Plate (Which is great for vocals). Logic pro has a convolution reverb called Space Designer. Pro Tools has Space. Watch me use Space in Pro Tools here
Algorithmic reverb, is computer made spaces. These maybe more easier to find since is easier to make. These reverb plug-ins generate space well, but is less natural. Since these are so easy to make you can get a cheesy or cheap sound out of it. So if you had that amazing solo that needs reverb try to use convolution reverb. Algorithmic reverb, can sit well in the mix if used properly. If you need to get a bigger sound out of them try doubling up on the same reverb plug-in, but change the settings on both,
