Automation can be a big mess if misused. If used properly, it can elevate your mix to another level. Are there rights, and wrongs to automation? Maybe...
Automation should never happen in the beginning stages of mixing. Some may disagree. However, this is my reason; Automation makes it's own parameter change once it's set. So, that means if you want to make changes on that parameter again, you can't "just do it", you have to automate that as well. Which can make leveling harder. Let's use the fader on the lead vocal as an example: The balance for the song is OK, you decide to add automation to the lead vocal on the build-up into the hook. Considering the fact that the build-up is getting louder than the lead vocal, you have yet applied any compression, EQ, or any other dynamic changes. The automation is set, and you're happy with the current changes. However. you get deeper in the mix and noticed that the lead vocal is too loud now. By now you've made multiple automation changes, so the fader is following the automation you've made. Getting the right level now means that you have to disable or erase the automation you've already applied and work on getting the correct level. Which in fact, it the definition of starting over. Yeah, you can try to find or apply tricks to work around it, but you'll get frustrated before you achieve your goal.
Balance everything first, apply any dynamics, EQ's, and panning, before you add automation. Automation should be the in the final stages of your mixing process. It can bring life and character to your song. Thank me later! #HappyMixing
