Mixing in headphones can have it's benefits for any level of mixing. Whether it's for close listening to make sure unwanted sound, isn't there. Detailed listening to compression, or eq changes. Even just to see how the overall mix would sound, in headphones. With all the pro's that comes with headphone mixing, there are con's. Here are three pro's and con's.
Pro's:
Room acoustics won't effect what you hear in your headphones
Quieter sounds can be easier to hear.
Good studio monitoring headphones, can be cheaper than buying monitors.
Con's
Kicks and bass can be over mixed due to desired "thump"
Sound field is reduced to left and right. (Try using Waves "NX" to solve that problem)
Headphone coloring can effect processing. Be sure you learn the headphones frequency responce.
