We all know that listening to music can be exciting, emotional, and has a certain feel to it. But do we ever acknowledge the level we're listening too? During the mix process, this is very important.
The level of music is very important to an engineer's ear. If you think I'm talking about the export of the final mix, I’m not. What I am talking about is the output of your monitors. Having your monitors at high levels can be cool -- at first -- but that causes ear fatigue very fast. Fatigued ears almost guarantee you're making incorrect judgements on your mixes because it's harder to hear changes in your mix.
Mixing with your levels at a lower level, can be very useful. It reduces ear fatigue, helps your judgement, and allows you to hear and make precise changes in your mixes. It's okay to turn your levels up every now and again to feel the vibrations. Just make sure it's not for a long time. When the levels are lower, you can actually hear everything clearer than with louder levels.
Remember you can also lose your hearing faster too! So preserve your ears!
