If you haven't switch plug-ins around on your DAW's mixing chain, then you've probably never noticed how it can change the way your mix sound.
This can be effective in ways to help get the sound your looking for. But knowing plug-ins pro's and con's is essential.
Pro's and Con's: We're going to start with compression. Compression can smooth out vocals, but it causes sibilance (the esses in words). Having a DeEsser handy after compression can be handy. (Remember to use your ears before making a decision).
Mixing Chain: A mixing chain is a line of plug-ins/effects used to process audio signals. Based off the pro and con about compression, order is important. Now, let's add an EQ to the mixing chain. This situation is subjective, but adding an EQ after compression, can add tone to the compressed vocal. Compressing after the EQ, can compress the tone that you've made, but can also work as a safety net from boosting. The next time you mix, try switching the order of some plug-ins to hear how it change your sound.
