In today's world, music is being created everyday. Musical history being made, and chart shattering records are being broken. What about unsigned artists? Where do they fall at in these historic moments of music? Well, if you're not famous or close to being signed, you may not fall close to any of those. This bring my question; is it important for unsigned (underground) artist to fully get their music mixed, or even mastered?
I do understand (as an artist and mix engineer) that budgets can be small, but completing a musical project can be expensive. Which leave artists to a DIY project to complete their music or even telling the engineer: "As long as my vocals can be heard, i don't care about the rest." In which my opinion is; not having everything mixed but the vocals takes away the impact of the song. I understand that vocals are most important because it leads the song, but the music drives it. Imagine hearing your favorite song and that guitar solo comes on, it was dull and dry. Or when the hottest club record comes on, the bass has no impact.
That's what's missing from unsigned artist, that "just worry about the vocals." Aside from marketing and promotion, what the consumer hear plays a big role for your "Big Hit". Work with your engineer, or even KoncreatMixing.com to get the most out of your record. You'll be surprised on the response you'll get by telling them your situation, and what you can do to work things out.
